COPING WITH GRIEF

"GRIEVE BECAUSE YOU LOVE THEM AND SMILE BECAUSE YOU KNEW THEM"

When we lose a pet that we have loved for a short or long time, our grief can be overwhelming. It can leave us feeling guilty, devastated, angry, hurt. To most of us we have lost our “best mate” and definitely a “member of the family”.

We must all remember not to feel embarrassed to let others see us cry………………it’s a very natural reaction and will make long-term recovery easier.

The first few days or even weeks can have you thinking that you will never get over the loss. It can make you feel physically ill, lonely and feeling that you cannot cope with ordinary day to day living.

Remember, there is no set time for healing. Take one day at a time………………you’re going to have some good days and some bad days. The bad ones can come along just when you think you’ve turned a corner. It’s all part of the healing process. Talk to people who genuinely want to listen………..usually people that knew your pet and how much you loved and cared for it. They won’t think that you are a nuisance……………..you will find them very supportive.

If you have other pets in your home, remember they too could be affected by the loss of their mate.  If you bring your pet home for burial, let your other pet say goodbye too.  They can do this by sniffing and even pawing at their mate.  It’s quite common for the pet that is left to be lethargic, go off of their food and maybe lie in the spot where their mate used to. Extra cuddles will go a long way in helping them recover.

As the healing process continues, you will find that you will recall past memories of your pet with a smile and you will be able to say with confidence…………….“Do you remember when…….”

DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN?

Do you remember when we first met

The way you snuggled up to me?

One hug and you became my friend

And then you curled up on my knee

Do you remember how we shared

Our nights in front of winter fires?

Just being loved and cared for

Were your only heart's desires.

Do you remember autumn walks

When you played with falling leaves

And when you wanted me to play

How you tugged upon my sleeves?

I remember all the love we shared

The happy days we had together

Although you do not walk with me

You'll live in my heart for ever

A good dog never dies.  He always stays and walks besides you on crisp autumn days when frost is on the fields and winter's drawing near.  His head is within your hand in his old way..............Anonymous
